Ghost Box

Ghost Box layers session logging over the spirit box engine. It analyses the live signal for amplitude, spectral flux, centroid and voice-like structure, and writes timestamped entries you can review or export, including markers you drop yourself while listening.

Optional microphone input is analysed on the device and never routed to the speakers or uploaded. Every event label describes an audio observation - a spike, a spectral change, voice-like activity - rather than asserting a cause.

How to use Ghost Box

  1. Press Power, choose a radio band and pick an operating mode: Scan for the simulated sweep alone, Listen to analyse your microphone, or Session for both together.
  2. Set the sweep with Speed, the static bed with Noise, and how often stations break through with Signal. Band narrows the receiver passband, Dist adds degradation and Inst adds carrier wobble and drift.
  3. If you use Listen or Session, allow microphone access and set Mic gain so ordinary room sound moves the meter slightly but does not pin it.
  4. Choose a detection sensitivity with Sens, then start a new session. Events the analysis detects are written to the timeline with a timestamp.
  5. Add your own markers while you listen — a sound in the room, a fragment you want to hear again — and give each a short note.
  6. End the session and export the log as JSON, or download the audio recording to review elsewhere.

Tips

  • Markers are the most useful part of a session. Logging what you heard at the moment you heard it is far more reliable than remembering it later.
  • Randomise all settings is a quick way to find a sound you like, but note the settings before you start a session you mean to compare with others.

What does Ghost Box add to the Spirit Box?

Logging and analysis. The sweep engine is shared, but Ghost Box measures the live signal — amplitude, spectral flux, spectral centroid and voice-like structure — and keeps a timestamped record of events and your own markers that you can export.

What counts as an event?

A measurable change in the audio: a level spike, a sudden change in the spectrum, or a stretch that looks voice-like. Each entry is labelled with what was measured rather than with a cause.

Is my microphone audio played back or uploaded?

No. Microphone input is analysed on the device. It is not routed to your speakers, which would cause feedback, and it is never uploaded.

What is in the exported log?

A JSON file with the session’s start and end times, each detected event with its timestamp and measurements, and your markers with their notes. It opens in any text editor.

Which radio bands can I choose?

AM, FM and shortwave-style bands, plus a random option. They change the frequency range shown and the character of the simulated receiver; no real radio is tuned.

This is an instrument and a sound tool, provided for entertainment and experiment. It describes what it measures and does not identify the cause of anything it shows.
